Because love

Because love can't speak for itself

we must string words together in the right order
then cross them out and begin again, over and over

fly in radioactive jets to cradle it
under the bones of our grand-children

cry when we are determined not to
and work where there is no pay and no record of it

recover from surgical procedures
no matter how painful they may be

listen to death slowly complete its bargain
and talk to the departed

say hello knowing it’s a withdrawal
from the bank of goodbye. Because love

can’t speak for itself we must
learn through all our trials

just how awkward we are.
